Legal and Ethical Guidance Through Life's Transitions
Deborah has a boutique practice that focuses on advocating for individuals in transition using an interdisciplinary approach. Deborah concentrates on serving her clients in the areas of adoption, dissolution of marriage, probate and guardianship proceedings, special education, bar candidacy, and mediation.
Most of Deborah's clients find her by word of mouth, and often consult her in interrelated legal areas that may go unaddressed by seeking an attorney who narrowly specializes in a single area, as a client's needs often do not fit neatly inside a particular area of law as presented in textbooks.
A family seeking to adopt a child should not have to go to a second attorney to make their first will and estate plan for their new family, or to a third attorney if emergency relief is necessary through the juvenile court pending the adoption, or to yet another if the child or another beneficiary has special needs that would be negatively impacted by a traditional estate plan. Family members of children with disabilities have special planning needs that vary from a typical estate plan and may go unaddressed if the planner does not think to ask about special needs. The same child may later need advocacy to access services from the county or school district, or a guardianship upon reaching adulthood. Divorcing families of children with special needs have their own set of concerns, as do non-traditional families who have adopted and want to ensure each partner has a right to a continuing relationship with their children. In all cases Deborah is a strong advocate for her clients who seeks creative solutions that protect their rights.
Deborah also firmly believes in an attorney's obligation to address not only legal concerns but ethical and practical ones as well in advising her clients. Involvement in the legal system often reflects much larger issues at work in a client's life that will affect and be affected by any purely legal solution.
